Toshiba’s Stunning New Digital Photo Frame With DiVX

Toshiba have announced details of a new digital photo frame the DPF7XSE. It features a seven inch screen with a resolution of 800 x 480, and also comes with integrated one watt stereo speakers. It comes with an infrared remote, no pricing or release details are available yet. With all those features it seem more like a mini entertainment centre rather than a photo frame.
It has support for SD / MMC / CF memory, and also come with 256 MB of built in storage, there is also USB 2.0 and it supports JPEG, MP3, WMA, MPEG4 and DiVX.

The worlds coolest toaster?

Nothing gets your morning going like a cup of joe and a piece of toast slathered in your favorite spread. Of course, it can also be the time of day when things are hectic to start. Kids running around, people in and out, everyone trying to remind everyone else about the super important soccer meet after school. Next time, put it on toast.
This toaster by Sasha Tseng incorporates a little message board where one can read quick notes. The message also gets “toasted” into the toast itself so it gives new meaning to “read while you eat”.
Of course if I had it my way, I’d use it as a scathing reminder to friends suffering from hangovers. Yes, this piece of toast will help settle your stomach buy not without first reading my warnings about binge drinking.

Microsoft move could be the end of the JPEG

Microsoft Corp. will soon submit to an international standards organization a new photo format that offers higher-quality images with better compression, the company said today.The format, HD Photo -- recently renamed from Windows Media Photo -- is taking aim at the JPEG format, a 15-year-old technology widely used in digital cameras and image applications. Both formats take images and use compression to make the file sizes smaller so more photos can fit on a memory card. During compression, however, the quality of the photo tends to degrade.
Microsoft said HD Photo's lightweight algorithm causes less damage to photos during compression, with higher-quality images that are half the size of a JPEG. The format can also accommodate "lossless" and "lossy" compression, two methods of compressing photo data with different effects on image quality. Microsoft said adjustments can be made to color balance and exposure settings that won't discard or truncate data that occurs with other bit-map formats.

W3C to Develop New HTML Spec

The World Wide Web Consortium has announced plans to create a new HTML standard and to enhance the XHTML specification. The move to update HTML comes as a nod to the developer and design communities as well as the browser manufacturers. The W3C is issuing a call for participation in the working group that will oversee the new standard, and although the list of participants has yet to be made, browser vendors who are members of the W3C include Apple, Mozilla, Opera and Microsoft. In fact, Chris Wilson, platform architect of the Internet Explorer platform at Microsoft, is the co-chair of the new working group.
And the W3C is inviting not only the browser vendors, but also application developers and content designers to help design the next version of HTML by participating in the new W3C HTML Working Group.

Microsoft VS Google on copyright infringement

Today, Microsoft is set to return the acknowledgement, in its own loud and very public stage way, according to Associated Press reports.
Companies that create no content of their own, and make money solely on the backs of other people's content, are raking in billions through advertising revenue," wrote Thomas C. Rubin, an associate general counsel at Microsoft, in the speech he planned to give at the annual meeting of the Association of American Publishers in New York.
Companies? The number one search engine company, Microsoft nemesis Google.
Google's track record of protecting copyrights “is weak at best," wrote Rubin. Anyone who visits YouTube, which Google purchased last year, will immediately recognize that it follows a cavalier approach to copyright, he indicated.
Google in fact warned of the copyright infringement lawsuit risks it faces in its 2006 Annual Report filed last week.
The Association of American Publishers is suing Google for allegedly improper digitization of books, but supports Microsoft's book scanning initiatives.
Google's chief legal officer, David Drummond, defends Google's fair-use/DMCA based business model as providing "more exposure and in many cases more revenue for authors, publishers and producers of content."

What Adobe's CS3 will mean for Apple

With Adobe's latest Creative Suite ready for lift-off March 27 the prognosticators are trying to figure out what it means for Apple.
Apple's enterprise customers (read creative pros) have been holding off on upgrading to new Intel-based Macs until Adobe's new products get rolling. Given the timeline given by Adobe it's likely Apple will get some boost in its June quarter.
Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster says Adobe's CS3 is likely to ship three weeks after the announcement date. By the time it's in the sales channel it'll be April 21 or so.
Munster says:
"Our September 2006 survey of 50 Apple pro users suggested 50 percent of pro users would upgrade to an Intel-based pro-level Mac within six months of the CS3 launch. Since CS3 will be optimized for Intel Macs for the first time, many pro users have been waiting for this launch to upgrade from their PowerPC-based systems. We estimate there are 3 million Adobe professional users."
Munster adds that that 50 percent rate is most likely too optimistic. Applying a conservative 15 percent upgrade rate to a Mac Pro or MacBook Pro would add another 450,000 additional Mac units.
Meanwhile, there's a lot of chatter about Apple's new Leopard OS driving Mac sales. Prudential analyst Jesse Tortora said Monday that he expected a late March launch of Leopard. If Tortora is right Leopard would combine with CS3 to drive sales.
Shannon Cross, an analyst at Soleil Securities, doubts Leopard is coming that early.
"We note that Apple management has consistently held to a Spring 2007 launch time frame. Based on prior releases, we believe it takes three to four weeks at least for an OS release to go from golden master to public availability. Compounding this, the "top secret" features of Leopard have not yet been announced or made available to the beta testing Apple developer community. We think existing known bugs, plus the time required to beta test the "top secret" features make it very unlikely Leopard will benefit F2Q07 results and instead look for an April or May release with benefit in F3Q07."
Couple Leopard with CS3 and the iPhone and AppleTV launches and the Apple will have multiple product cycles driving it to the end of calendar 2007.

Adobe to take Photoshop online

Hoping to get a jump on Google and other competitors, Adobe Systems plans to release a hosted version of its popular Photoshop image-editing application within six months, the company's chief executive said Tuesday. The online service is part of a larger move to introduce ad-supported online services to complement its existing products and broaden the company reach into the consumer market, Adobe CEO Bruce Chizen told CNET News.com.
Chizen said Adobe laid the foundation for a hosted Photoshop product with Adobe Remix, a Web-based video-editing tool it offers through the PhotoBucket media-sharing site. Like Adobe Remix, the hosted Photoshop service is set to be free and marketed as an entry-level version of Adobe's more sophisticated image-editing tools, including Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. Chizen envisions revenue from the Photoshop service coming from online advertising.
